Jenkins Level 1, Task 4: Organizing Jobs with Folders¶

Today's task was a practical lesson in Jenkins administration: keeping a clean and organized dashboard. As the number of CI/CD jobs grows, a single, flat list becomes chaotic. The solution is to use folders, and this task was all about creating a folder and moving existing jobs into it.
This was also another great troubleshooting experience. The feature I needed wasn't available out of the box, and I had to diagnose the problem as a missing plugin, install it, and then proceed. This document is my detailed, first-person account of that entire process.

The Task¶
My objective was to organize the jobs on my Jenkins server. The specific requirements were:
1. Log into the Jenkins UI.
2. Create a new folder named Apache.
3. Move two existing jobs, httpd-php and services, into this new Apache folder.
My Step-by-Step Solution¶
My path to success involved first fixing the environment by installing a missing plugin, and then proceeding with the main task. The entire process was done through the Jenkins web UI.
Phase 1: Installing the "CloudBees Folders Plugin"¶
When I first tried to create the folder, the option was missing. I quickly diagnosed this as a missing plugin.
1. I logged into Jenkins as admin and navigated to Manage Jenkins > Plugins.
2. I went to the Available plugins tab and searched for CloudBees Folders.
3. I selected the "CloudBees Folders Plugin" and clicked to install it.
4. On the installation page, I checked the box to "Restart Jenkins when installation is complete..." and waited for the server to come back online.
Phase 2: Creating the Folder¶
With the plugin now installed and Jenkins restarted, the "Folder" option was available.
1. From the main dashboard, I clicked New Item.
2. I entered the name Apache and selected the Folder item type.
3. I clicked OK, and then Save on the next page. This created the new, empty folder on my dashboard.
Phase 3: Moving the Jobs¶
I moved each job one by one.
1. For the httpd-php job, I clicked on its name, then clicked "Move" in the left sidebar.
2. From the "Destination" dropdown, I selected Jenkins » Apache.
3. I clicked the "Move" button.
4. I repeated the exact same process for the services job.
Phase 4: Verification¶
The final verification was simple.
1. On the main Jenkins dashboard, the two jobs were gone, and only the Apache folder was visible.
2. When I clicked on the Apache folder, I saw both the httpd-php and services jobs listed inside.
This confirmed I had successfully organized my Jenkins instance as required.
My Troubleshooting Journey: The Missing Folder Option¶
This task was a great lesson in how Jenkins' functionality depends on plugins.
* Failure: "Folder" Type Not Available
- Symptom: When I went to New Item, the only option available was Freestyle project. I could not find the Folder item type that the task required.
- Diagnosis: This was a clear sign that the feature was not installed. I knew from experience that folders are a core feature, but they are provided by a plugin, not by the Jenkins core itself. The plugin must be missing.
- Solution: The fix was to install the "CloudBees Folders Plugin". I navigated to the Plugin Manager, found it in the "Available" tab, installed it, and restarted Jenkins. After the restart, the "Folder" option appeared exactly where I expected it, and I was able to proceed with the task.
Why Did I Do This? (The "What & Why")¶
- Jenkins Folders: These are organizational items in Jenkins that work just like directories on a computer. They are absolutely essential for managing a Jenkins server at any scale. Without them, the main dashboard becomes a single, massive, unmanageable list of jobs. - CloudBees Folders Plugin: This is the plugin that provides the "Folder" functionality. It is considered a fundamental, "must-have" plugin for any Jenkins installation. My experience proved this, as I couldn't even start the task without it. - Job Organization: The primary reason for this task is to promote a clean and organized CI/CD environment. By grouping related jobs (like the Apache-related jobs in my task) into a folder, I make the system easier to navigate and manage for the entire team. - "Move" Functionality: This is a simple but powerful feature that allows administrators to refactor and reorganize the job structure without having to delete and recreate jobs.
Deep Dive: The Importance of an Organized Jenkins¶
This task seemed simple on the surface, but it represents a critical aspect of managing a mature Jenkins environment.

- Scalability: When you only have two jobs, folders might seem unnecessary. But when you have 200 jobs across 10 different teams, a flat structure is a nightmare. Folders are the key to scaling Jenkins.
- Permissions: Folders are not just for visual organization; they are also a key part of security. In a more advanced setup, I could have configured the security on the
Apachefolder itself. This would allow me to grant the "Apache Team" full access to all jobs inside that folder, while completely hiding it from the "Database Team." This makes managing permissions much easier than setting them on every single job individually. - Clarity and Navigation: A well-organized Jenkins instance is self-documenting. A new team member can immediately see the structure of the projects and find the jobs relevant to them without having to search through a giant list.
Common Pitfalls¶
- Plugin Not Installed: As I discovered, the most common failure is trying to create a folder when the "CloudBees Folders Plugin" is not installed. - Moving to the Wrong Destination: When moving a job, it's possible to accidentally select the wrong destination folder from the dropdown, especially in a complex, nested folder structure. - Forgetting to Restart: If I had installed the plugin but not checked the "Restart" box, the "Folder" item type would not have appeared, and I would have been stuck, thinking the installation had failed.
Exploring the UI Used¶
This task was entirely UI-based. The key navigation paths I used were:
- Manage Jenkins > Plugins: My starting point for fixing the environment. I used the Available plugins tab to find and install the "CloudBees Folders Plugin."
- Dashboard > New Item: The primary location for creating new items, including jobs and, after my fix, folders.
- [Job Name] > Move: The specific action in a job's sidebar that allows you to relocate it to a new destination, like a folder.
