Docker Level 4, Task 1: Debugging a Broken Dockerfile¶
Today's task was a fantastic real-world scenario that every DevOps engineer faces: I was given a broken Dockerfile and had to figure out why it was failing and how to fix it. This was a great lesson in reading Docker's build output to pinpoint errors and understanding the fundamental difference between the RUN and COPY instructions.
This document is my detailed, first-person account of the debugging process. I'll cover how I identified the error, the logic behind the fix, and how I handled a secondary issue of building an untagged image.

The Task¶
My objective was to fix a broken Dockerfile located at /opt/docker/Dockerfile on App Server 3. The requirements were:
1. Identify the error causing the docker build command to fail.
2. Fix the Dockerfile so that it could successfully build an image.
3. I was not allowed to change the base image or any of the existing valid configuration steps.
My Step-by-Step Solution¶
My approach was to first reproduce the error to understand it, then apply the fix, and finally verify my work by successfully building the image.
Phase 1: The Diagnosis¶
- I connected to App Server 3:
ssh banner@stapp03. - I navigated to the directory:
cd /opt/docker. - I attempted to build the image to see the error for myself.
sudo docker build . - The build failed as expected. I carefully read the output, which pointed directly to the problem:
This was the "smoking gun." The build process couldn't find the
=> ERROR [6/8] RUN cp certs/server.crt ... ... cp: cannot stat 'certs/server.crt': No such file or directorycerts/server.crtfile when it tried to run thecpcommand.
Phase 2: The Fix¶
The diagnosis made the solution clear. The Dockerfile was using the wrong instruction. RUN executes commands inside the container, where the local files don't exist. I needed to use COPY to transfer files from my host's build context into the container.
1. I opened the Dockerfile for editing: sudo vi Dockerfile.
2. I replaced the last three incorrect RUN cp ... commands with the correct COPY instruction.
**Before (The Error):**

- I saved and quit the file.
Phase 3: Verification¶
With the Dockerfile corrected, I rebuilt the image. This time, I also remembered to tag it properly.
sudo docker build -t fixed-apache:latest .
sudo docker images showed my new fixed-apache:latest image in the list, proving the task was complete.
Why Did I Do This? (The "What & Why")¶
- Dockerfile Debugging: This is a core skill. The key is to not be intimidated by the error output. Docker's build process is sequential, and it will tell you exactly which step failed and why. My task was to interpret that error message and apply the correct solution.
- RUN vs. COPY: This was the central concept of the task. Understanding the difference is fundamental to writing correct Dockerfiles.
- RUN: This instruction executes a command inside the image's filesystem during the build. It's used for tasks like installing packages (RUN apt-get install ...), creating users, or running configuration scripts.
- COPY: This instruction copies files or directories from the host's build context into the image's filesystem. It's the standard way to get your application code, configuration files, and other assets into your image.
- Build Context: When I ran docker build ., the . at the end is very important. It specifies the "build context"—the directory on my local machine whose contents are sent to the Docker daemon. The COPY instruction can only access files that are within this context.
- Image Tagging (-t): When I first built the image without the -t flag, it created an untagged or "dangling" image shown as <none>:<none>. This is not useful. Tagging an image with a memorable name (like fixed-apache:latest) is essential for being able to run, manage, and push it later.
Deep Dive: A Line-by-Line Explanation of the Dockerfile¶
Here is the final, corrected Dockerfile with a detailed explanation of what each line does.

Common Pitfalls¶
- Confusing RUN and COPY: This was the main error in the original file and is a very common mistake for beginners.
- Building without a Tag: Running docker build . without the -t flag results in an untagged <none>:<none> image, which is hard to manage.
- Path Issues: The source path for a COPY instruction must be relative to the build context directory.
Exploring the Commands Used¶
- sudo docker build [options] .: The main command to build an image from a Dockerfile.
- .: Specifies that the current directory is the "build context."
- -t fixed-apache:latest: The tag flag, used to name the image with a repository (fixed-apache) and a tag (latest).
- sudo docker images: Lists all the Docker images stored on the local server. I used this to verify my new, tagged image was created.
- sudo docker tag [SOURCE_IMAGE_ID] [NEW_NAME:TAG]: A command to add a new tag to an existing image. This was my "fix-it" solution for the untagged image I created by mistake.
- sudo docker rmi [IMAGE_ID_OR_NAME]: The command to remove an image. It's good practice to use this to clean up old or untagged images to save disk space.
